Matthew Perry’s demise has been attributed to the “acute effects of ketamine,” as indicated in the autopsy report released by the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office. The report specifies that Perry passed away due to the immediate impact of ketamine followed by drowning.
Perry, aged 54, passed away on October 28 at his Los Angeles home, and the fire department responded to a medical emergency call at 4:07 p.m.
What is Ketamine?
Ketamine is described as a “dissociative anesthetic with hallucinogenic effects” by the US Drug Enforcement Administration. It distorts sight and sound perception, creating a sense of disconnection and loss of control. Additionally, ketamine can induce sedation, immobility, pain relief, and amnesia in users.
Autopsy Report
The autopsy report mentions that Matthew Perry, who had reportedly been clean for 19 months, was undergoing ketamine infusion therapy. His most recent treatment occurred just one and a half weeks before his death. However, the coroner pointed out that the ketamine found in his system at the time of death could not have resulted from that recent infusion therapy. This is because ketamine’s half-life is relatively short, lasting 3 to 4 hours or less.
The autopsy on Matthew Perry revealed that the way he took drugs leading to his death is unknown. He was found in a pool at his home, and although there were medications in his house, none were near the pool area. The autopsy found no signs of injuries or foul play. The high levels of ketamine in his system suggest that his heart and breathing were affected and drowning likely happened as he lost consciousness.
Perry’s Addiction Problem
Before his passing, Matthew Perry openly discussed his battle with addiction. In his 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” he shared his path to sobriety and the sense of accomplishment that came with staying clean. Perry explained in a 2022 interview with PEOPLE that he chose to share his story when he felt secure in his sobriety, away from the challenges of alcoholism and addiction. He believed that by sharing his experiences, he could potentially help others dealing with similar struggles
Jennifer Aniston revealed that she was in contact with Matthew Perry on the day of his death, describing him as “happy” and “healthy” in his final moments. In an interview with Variety magazine, she shared that they were texting that morning, and she noted that Perry did not appear to be in pain or facing any struggles. Aniston expressed that he seemed content and in good spirits during their communication.
