President Droupadi Murmu Conferred with Honorary Degree
President Droupadi Murmu was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law by the University of Mauritius on Tuesday, reflecting the deep-rooted bilateral ties between the two nations.
Address to Mauritian Youth
The esteemed recognition was granted during an official ceremony at the University of Mauritius, where President Murmu delivered an inspiring address to the audience, particularly the Mauritian youth. She emphasized the significance of nurturing the strong bond between India and Mauritius, urging the youth to embrace their shared cultural heritage and maintain connections with India for a prosperous future.
Randhir Jaiswal, the Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, described the occasion as a significant symbol of the robust relationship between India and Mauritius. He quoted President Murmu’s encouragement for Mauritian youth to preserve their proud history while investing in a bright future during her address.
OCI Card Announcement
During her three-day State visit to Mauritius, President Murmu announced India’s approval of a special provision granting Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards to seventh-generation individuals of Indian origin in Mauritius. This decision aims to enable younger Mauritians of Indian descent to reconnect with their ancestral homeland.
India’s Support for Development
At the National Day celebrations in Port Louis, President Murmu highlighted India’s support for development projects in Mauritius, underscoring Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives in the country. Additionally, she engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jagnauth to explore avenues for further strengthening bilateral relations and presented a RuPay card to him as a gesture of goodwill. The introduction of RuPay card services in Mauritius earlier this year marked another milestone in India-Mauritius relations.
Warm Welcome
President Droupadi Murmu’s visit commenced on Monday, greeted with a warm welcome and full honors by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth at the airport, marking the beginning of a significant diplomatic engagement.
