Ex-Bureaucrat Navneet Kumar Sehgal Appointed as Prasar Bharati Chairman After 4-Year Vacancy

Retired civil servant Navneet Kumar Sehgal has been named as the new chairman of Prasar Bharati, ending a four-year vacancy in the position.

Appointment Details

Sehgal takes over from Surya Prakash, whose tenure ended in February 2020 upon reaching the age of 70, the upper age limit for holding the post.

According to an order issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on March 15, 2024, Sehgal’s appointment is effective immediately for a term of three years or until he reaches the age of seventy, whichever comes first.

Selection Process

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar convened a meeting on Friday to select the chairman of India’s public broadcaster. As the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the vice president leads the selection committee for the Prasar Bharati chairman, alongside the chairperson of the Press Council of India and a nominee of the President.

The meeting was attended by Press Council of India chairperson Justice Ranjana Desai (retd) and Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sanjay Jaju.
