The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan, is recognised as a holy month for Muslims. The month involves praying, fasting, and fundraising worldwide. Criminals take advantage of these charitable acts and find ways to earn easy money; begging is one such way.
In light of this situation, the heavy patrolling of the Dubai Police has arrested 112 males and 90 females, rounding to 202 beggars. The arrests, as stated by the director of the Suspects and Criminal Phenomena Department, Brig Ali Salem Al Shamsi, were part of the “anti-begging campaign”. He further said that in the spirit of charity, the citizens are donating huge amounts to these criminals.
The act of begging is derogatory to society as it leads to security issues, distorts civilised appearance and hampers the image of the country. Additionally, the act is a cause of various crimes like theft and robbery.
In its further report, the Dubai Police head stated that the majority of these beggars were visa holders. It was urged by the officials that the citizens should immediately report on the helpline number “901” or use the e-platform to report begging activities.
