A recent development can be observed in the US-Pakistan relationship after the US President signed a letter for the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
US President Joe Biden conveyed his intentions of continuing his support towards Pakistan. The letter is said to have broken the tradition of not engaging with any of the prime ministers in Pakistan during his tenure; he had neither telephoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan after his election victory nor spoke to Sharif when he succeeded him in April 2022.
This letter witnesses a major shift in the US-Pakistan ties as its emphasis on potential growth in health, education and economic growth. It also highlights the collaboration in the US-Pakistan Alliance Framework and human rights.
Major Foriegn Policy event in Sharif’s tenure
This occurred weeks after Sharif took oath as the country’s prime minister for a second time earlier this month. He is the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Despite his party having openly accused the US of orchestrating his downfall after he was removed through a vote of no-confidence in April 2022, the letter has propped up.
This is an attempt to reset ties between the nations as the US Ambassador said earlier this month that Pakistan is an “important partner” and expressed his hope in strengthening the ties.
Finally, the concluded by Biden saying “Together, we will continue to forge a strong partnership between our nations and a close bond between our people”.
