On April 11, the UK announced Lindy Cameron, the Head of the U.K. National Cyber Security Centre, as the High Commissioner to the Republic of India. Cameron will be the first woman to hold this post. She is expected to take up her appointment this month.
Her portfolio involves free trade agreement negotiations between India and the U.K.
She will be succeeding Alex Ellis CMG. He concludes his three years of appointment in New Delhi and is set to be Britain’s next ambassador to Spain.
Experience of the new High Commissioner
Cameron, a graduate of Oxford University, was the Director General of the U.K.’s Northern Ireland Office. She has also previously served the Middle East and North Africa as DFID Deputy Director and DFID Director Middle East, Humanitarian, Conflict & Security. She has held various senior positions in the UK’s international development department, including director general for country programmes.
There has been an exchange of posts on X between the UK, India, and Cameron, celebrating the appointment and wishing her a warm welcome.
The appointment comes amidst the two nations are improving and strengthening their bilateral relations. Trade has increased even as the two countries negotiate a free-trade agreement that could be signed this year.
Additionally, the UK plans to increase its defence presence in the Indo-Pacific region. On Wednesday, the UK announced that it plans to hold joint exercises with the countries of the region. In 2025, the UK plans to deploy the nation’s Carrier Strike Group and Royal Navy’s Littoral Response group to the Indian Ocean.
