The vacation bench of the Supreme Court declined to hear an urgent plea from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for a 7-day extension of his interim bail for health reasons. The court stated that it would be suitable for the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to decide on the listing of the plea
The request for a quick hearing to extend Kejriwal’s interim bail deadline by seven more days was brought up in front of Justices JK Maheshwari and KV Viswanathan.
Justice Maheshwari suggested allowing the Chief Justice of India to make a decision, and questioned why the matter was not brought up in front of Justice Datta the previous week.
In his response to the court, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who is representing Kejriwal, stated that the prescription was provided two days ago.
The court subsequently declared: “This matter is acknowledged and will be held under consideration. There is nothing we can do. This issue was discussed and set aside on May 17. Place before CJI for appropriate orders.”
Kejriwal, who received temporary release from the Supreme Court on May 10 for a 21-day campaign in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is expected to turn himself in on June 2.
On Monday, which was May 27th, Kejriwal submitted a new request to the Supreme Court, asking for a 7-day extension of his temporary release due to health reasons.
His Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stated that the Delhi CM needs to have a PET-CT scan and other tests, leading to a request for a seven-day extension of interim bail.
Atishi, the Delhi minister and AAP leader, informed the press that he shed seven kilograms in weight shortly after being taken into custody. “He has yet to recover the weight. The test showed that his ketone level is extremely elevated. Doctors feel that additional testing is necessary for him, hence why this petition has been submitted.”
On March 21, the Enforcement Directorate arrested the Delhi Chief Minister in relation to a money laundering case linked to the AAP government’s defunct liquor excise policy.
