Paul Lynch, the 46 year old Irish author, won the Booker Prize for the novel Prophet song that reflects the political concerns of the present era. The book is set in a dystopian Dublin that is overcome by totalitarianism and tyranny.
Lynch, however, clarified that he did not believe that he was a political novelist. In fact, his work, according to him, is a reflection of the tides and shifts that have been taking place since time immemorial. He says that “we need to deepen our own responses to that kind of idea” and that he was not attempting to pass a warning. His intention was never to link his work to the rising support for the right wing that is being witnessed all over the world today.
Canadian author, Esi Edugyan, was a judging chair for the award and he stated that the decision to choose Lynch was not unanimous and that it took over six hours of voting to conclude a winner.
Lynch had been asked to comment on the protests that have broken out in Dublin following the stabbing that took place outside a primary school injuring three children. The police have attributed the shocking incident to a “lunatic faction driven by far right ideology”. To this, Lynch stated that he was astonished while simultaneously recognized that these sentiments are under the surface revealing themselves time and again.
Paul Lynch’s Prophet Song did not simply win the prize because it came out around a time when totalitarianism, war, refugee issues are heightened as was clarified by the judging chairs who stated that it was a deserved masterful work.
Paul Lynch’s Prophet Song
The story delves into the difficulties of living in a dystopian Ireland rife with civil war and images of a war torn nation where its people are fleeing from persecution. The Prophet Song hits harder because of the horrifying reality it depicts. It forces us to grapple with the misery of those who are caught up in the mess.
