Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, condemned Mithun Chakraborty’s decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). During a public rally in Raiganj, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader referred to Chakraborty as a “major betrayer from Bengal”. She alleged that he bowed his head at the RSS office to protect his son.
At a rally in Raiganj earlier this week, Ms. Banerjee had accused Mr. Chakraborty of “bowing his head in the RSS office just to save his son”. Mr. Chakraborty was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Trinamool in 2014 but the actor quit in 2016 citing ill health. A few years later, Mr. Chakraborty warmed up to the BJP.
The Chief Minister’s attack on the veteran actor came at a time when he has been actively campaigning for BJP candidates in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Mr. Chakraborty is one of the star campaigners of the BJP. On Saturday, he campaigned for Mr. Majumdar who is contesting from the Balurghat Lok Sabha seat in Dakshin Dinajpur district.
Chakraborty replies to Mamta Banerjee
Mithun Chakraborty slammed Mamata Banerjee for accusing him of being ‘a traitor’ during her public gathering in Raiganj. Reports indicate that he stated the Chief Minister has been profoundly impacted by the increasing number of BJP followers.
According to Siliguri Times, he responded to the CM’s comments by saying he was not a traitor, but a soldier. Chakraborty allegedly stated that he thought the CM was ‘mentally unstable‘.
BJP leader and actor Mithun Chakraborty conducted a roadshow in Siliguri, West Bengal as a part of the party’s preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The verbal conflict between Mithun Chakraborty and Mamata Banerjee occurred right before the first round of voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. Voting for three of West Bengal’s 42 Lok Sabha constituencies will take place on April 19. Coochbehar SC, Alipurduars ST, and Jalpaiguri are the names of these seats.
In 2014, Chakraborty was put forward as the TMC’s candidate for the Rajya Sabha election in West Bengal under Banerjee’s leadership.
Nevertheless, due to health issues, he stepped down from the Rajya Sabha in 2016.
One year before, Chakraborty was called in by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to be interrogated about the Saradha Chit Fund scandal.
Following the probe on the scandal, Chakraborty gave back ₹1.19 crore to the ED.
