Meryl Streep has broken her own record at the Golden Globes by being nominated for the 33rd time in Golden Globes history. She was nominated for best supporting actress (musical, comedy or drama) for her role in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building at the awards show’s upcoming 81st ceremony on Monday.
Streep’s achievements at the Golden Globes
Streep made history with her 30th nomination, becoming the most-nominated actor ever at the Golden Globes.
She also holds the record for the most wins, with a total of nine. In the 2024 Golden Globes, she’s nominated with other actors like Elizabeth Debicki, Abby Elliott, Christina Ricci, J. Smith-Cameron, and Hannah Waddingham.
Streep previously received the Cecil B. DeMille award in 2017 and used the platform to share her thoughts on then-President-elect Donald Trump, without mentioning him directly.
Other notable mentions from the Golden Globes
Barbie got nominated nine times, making it the film with the most nominations. Oppenheimer came next with eight nominations, and Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things each got seven nominations. In the television category, Only Murders in the Building, starring Streep, received five nominations, tying with The Bear. On the other hand, the final season of Succession earned nine nominations in total.
Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, the main acts in the show “Beef,” are the first two performers of Asian descent to be nominated in the limited series categories.
The awards show mentioned in its 2024 nominee announcement that Meryl Streep and Jodie Foster, nominated for her role in Netflix’s Nyad, have been nominees or winners at the awards in every decade since the 1970s.
Voter Diversity Issue
The awards show had issues with not having enough diversity among its voters which is said to have caused it to lose its broadcast in 2022 and led to changes in the organization. The new owners- DCP and Eldridge are trying to show that things have changed. They mentioned a new partnership with CBS and shared that the number of voters has increased to 300 people from 75 countries.
This is an attempt to make the Golden Globes seem more inclusive and diverse as a major awards group and to ensure that it appears fair and away from any more controversy. Barry Adelman from Dick Clark Productions (DCP) has stated that they now contain “the most culturally diverse major awards body”.
