Creation of history
On Tuesday, Barrister Varun Ghosh was appointed as the new senator after being chosen by the legislative assembly and legislative council to represent the Australian state in senate of federal Parliament. He became the first-ever India born member of Australian Parliament to take oath on Bhagwat Geeta and created history.
Ghosh’s oath-taking ceremony was met with warm wishes and several Australian politicians. Australian foreign minister, Penny Wong expressed her emotions by saying, ” Welcome to have you on Labor senate team”. She also appreciated how Ghosh was the first ever Australian Senator to sworn on Bhagwat Geeta. She quoted ” when you’re first at something, you have got to make sure you’re not the last”.
People also believed that Senator Ghosh would be a strong voice for the community and West Australians.
Who is Senator Varun Ghosh?
Born in 1985, Ghosh moved to Perth in 1997 and attended Christ Church Grammar School. He was lawyer in Perth and holds degree in Arts and Law from University of Western Australia and Commonwealth scholar in Law at University of Cambridge. He also worked as finance attorney in New York and consultant for World Bank in Washington D.C.
He strongly believes that high-quality education and training should be available to everyone. In the 2019 federal election, Ghosh ran as the fifth candidate on the Australian Labor Party’s Senate ticket in Western Australia, but he was not elected. Nevertheless, he continued his work as a barrister, handling legal matters in Western Australia and internationally with the World Bank.
Throughout his career, he has worked with organizations such as King & Wood Mallesons, dealing with legal matters for banks, resource companies, and construction companies.
