The assumption that “life is set” after getting into an IIT has been proven to be false in recent times.
The problem
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is currently in its placement season. Starting from December to post-February, which will officially end in May. However, the bright minds of these premium institutes are facing challenges to get lucrative jobs.
As reported by Hindustan Times, at IIT Bombay this year, 712 of the around 2,000 students registered for the 2024 placements—about 36%—have yet to secure jobs.
This data was brought to light by Dheeraj Singh, an alumnus and founder of the Global IIT Alumni Support Group. He also focused on the fact that of the 2,209 registered students in IIT Bombay in 2023, 1,485 were placed, which means 32.8% remained unplaced last session. Reasons
An official of IIT Bombay explained the reason for the existential question faced by IITians. He said that the major issue is the Global economic phenomenon. A dip in economies worldwide and the development of AI have questioned the degree’s value.
He added that the struggle was to invite companies on campus and negotiate with them on the institute-decided package for the graduates. In a proportion of the companies, a large chunk of the 380 companies that arrived to shop for talent were from the domestic market. Traditionally, international companies used to outnumber domestic companies.
According to a report by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), 1,485 students were placed out of 2,209 registered. The high demand of computer science and engineering students for the first time didn’t see a 100% placement success.
Earlier this year, the IIT Bombay placement cell had made an error, misguiding the students. However, it was rectified later. It stated that 85 candidates were offered over ₹1 crore; in reality, only 22 IIT-Bombay students received more than ₹1 crore in Phase-I of placements held in December.
It’s not just IIT Bombay; IIT Delhi couldn’t place 40% of students in 2023, while IIT Kharagpur stayed at 31%. This dip in placements has forced these institutes to intensify their search. They also plan to extend the placement season to June or July.
