Sushil Kumar Modi, a senior BJP leader and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister, died on Monday at the age of 72. In April of this year, Sushil Kumar Modi announced that he was battling cancer and would not participate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections because of his health.
The body of the ex-Rajya Sabha MP will be taken to his home in Patna’s Rajendra Nagar locality on May 14, and the final rites will be conducted on the same day.
Multiple BJP officials, such as PM Narendra Modi and current Bihar deputy CMs Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, shared their sorrow and sympathies with Sushil Kumar Modi’s mourning family.
Sushil Modi, one of the three well-known figures of the JP Movement alongside RJD leader Lalu Prasad and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, was seen as the top BJP leader in Bihar after Kailashpati Mishra.
In the 1990s, he is frequently recognized for changing the BJP into a powerful presence in the state, leading to it becoming the main Opposition party in 1995. He played a key role in establishing solid connections with NDA partner and JD(U) leader Nitish, who frequently acknowledged him for the state’s economic improvement.
Sushil Modi was chosen as the head of the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers for GST implementation in July 2011.
He was Deputy Chief Minister for a total of 11 years, split into two periods; the first from November 2005 to June 2013, and the second from July 2017 to December 2020, forming a strong partnership with Nitish.
