Earlier this week, on April 7, the ATP took to its X (formerly Twitter) account to congratulate Serbia’s Novak Djokovic for breaking a record.

What record did Djokovic break?
Novak Djokovic is now the oldest person to hold the position of World No. 1 in the ATP Rankings, breaking Roger Federer’s record.
He has been the oldest world No. 1 in history since February 2018, but Djokovic broke Federer’s record of 310 weeks. He currently has a staggering 420 total weeks, more than 100 weeks ahead of Federer.
The Swiss legend Roger Federer was the oldest player to top the ATP Rankings, having been 36 years 10 months 16 days on June 24, 2018, his final day in the top spot. As of April 8, 2024, Djokovic is 36 years 10 months 17 days and has now surpassed and bettered that accomplishment and could extend his record further.
This record will be extended by at least another week as Jannik Sinner (World No. 2) and Carlos Alcaraz (World No.3) will not be able to overtake Djokovic in the rankings before April 15.
This is not the first time that the current World No.1 has made history in the men’s tennis rankings and claimed a record previously held by Federer. Djokovic’s 24 Grand Slam singles titles are also the most in tennis history and the most by anyone in the Open era, which began in 1968. Federer broke Pete Sampras’ men’s record of 14 major championships and retired with 20 before Rafael Nadal, now with 22.
He has held onto No. 1 since returning there most recently after winning the U.S. Open last September. He first became a No. 1 player on July 4, 2011, at the age of 22.
Djokovic will next be seen in action at the French Open, defending his title. He entered the Monte Carlo Masters (French Open) clay-court tournament this week, which begins on May 26. It is said to be Djokovic’s first competitive action since he split from coach Goran Ivanisevic.
