The Lok Sabha Elections 2024 have commenced. Amidst this, Congress witnessed internal disturbance as the chief of the party’s Delhi unit, Arvinder Singh Lovely, resigned on Sunday.
Congress leader presented a resignation letter to Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday.
Why did Lovely resign?
Singh cited the Congress’s alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party as the main reason for his resignation, despite several AAP ministers facing corruption charges and some being jailed over the same. Further, the Aam Aadmi Party is also accusing the Congress of corruption.
He explicitly stated that the Delhi Congress Unit was against such an alliance. The allied party with Congress was formed solely on the basis of levelling false, fabricated and malafide corruption charges.
Additionally, Singh stated that the AICC general secretary unilaterally vetoed all unanimous decisions taken by senior Delhi Congress leaders. The AICC general secretary (Delhi In-charge) has denied him from making any senior appointments in the DPCC.
He said in his letter that “My request for the appointment of a veteran leader as Media head of DPCC was blatantly rejected”, and the party gave Lok Sabha tickets to candidates who were “total strangers” to the Delhi Congress unit. He felt “handicapped.”
Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit said that Lovely resigned because he was hurt as the party has continued to struggle to restore its “old reputation in Delhi”.
Who is Arvinder Singh Lovely?
Delhi native Lovely gained recognition as the youngest MLA to the Delhi Assembly after winning in 1998 from the Gandhi Nagar seat.
In 2017, after three decades of affiliation with the Congress, he joined the rival BJP in April of that year. However, he returned to the Congress fold after a few months, citing an ‘ideological misfit’ with the BJP.
He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the East Delhi constituency as president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee.
He was appointed to the now-resigned post in August 2023.
The 2024 elections are now in Phase II. The votes will be counted, and the results will be declared on 4 June 2024.
