The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party has won a decisive victory by securing 31 out of 32 seats in the assembly elections, reclaiming power in the state. Prem Singh Tamang, the Chief Minister of Sikkim and leader of the SKM party, has won in the Rhenock constituency by defeating his Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) rival Som Nath Poudyal with a lead of 7,044 votes.
Addressing the media at the party office in Gangtok during the celebration, Tamang thanked the people of Sikkim and recognized the efforts of his party members. Pawan Kumar Chamling suffered a total defeat in 2019, but that is the nature of a democracy. What they were unable to accomplish in 25 years, we achieved in just five years. Tamang stated that individuals have cast their votes based on that criterion.
In the meantime, the only victory secured by the SDF has come from the Shyari constituency. Former CM and SDF leader Pawan Kumar Chamling was defeated by SKM candidate Bhoj Raj Rai in the Poklok assembly seat by a margin of 3,063 votes.
A new era in Sikkim
This election marks the conclusion of a period that started in 1994 and was overseen by Chamling for a historic five terms spanning from 1994 to 2019. He ran for office in two areas, Poklok-Kamrang and Namcheybung, but was defeated by the SKM’s candidates in both places by around 20 per cent fewer votes.
Tenzing Norbu Lamtha from the Shari constituency is the only SDF candidate who has won. He was originally part of the SKM but switched to the SDF after being refused a party ticket. It wouldn’t be unexpected if he chooses to return to the SKM soon.
