The Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi postponed the decision on a request by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi asking Tihar jail officials to give him insulin, and permit him to talk to his doctor via video call for 15 minutes every day due to his severe diabetes and changing blood sugar levels.
The court will announce its decisions on Monday, April 22. Arvind Kejriwal is currently held in judicial custody for the money laundering case connected to the Delhi liquor excise policy.
The request indicated that Sunita Kejriwal, the wife of the Delhi chief minister, should be given permission to participate in the discussion with Dr. Ravichandra Rao via video call.
The Tihar Jail Report
The report stated that Arvind Kejriwal was assessed while in custody on April 1, where he disclosed a medical past involving diabetes, chronic asthma, and constipation.
The Chief Minister also stated that he was undergoing treatment to reverse his diabetes with a doctor from Telangana, as reported.
During a follow-up appointment at the OPD on April 2, 2024, he reported a supposed medical background of type-II diabetes Mellitus under continuous care for the past few years (lack of documentation) and a supposed history of chronic bronchitis/asthma (lack of documentation).
According to prisoner [Kejriwal], he claimed that he had been using insulin until recently but stopped a few months ago reportedly on the advice of a doctor in Telangana. Prisoner recently reported an increase in blood sugar levels and was prescribed oral medication by a doctor at the Emergency Department (ED). The report stated that at first, he was solely taking the oral medication Metformin.
Before being arrested, the chief minister was regularly taking a medication for diabetes and receiving treatment for chronic constipation from doctors at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi.
The report stated that the Telangana doctor had ceased the insulin treatment well before the CM’s arrest, and the MLC report from RML revealed that Kejriwal was not recommended insulin.
How did AAP Leader respond after the Tihar Jail Report?
Sanjay Singh from the Aam Aadmi Party claims that there is a plot to assassinate Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, who is currently held in Tihar jail following his arrest in a money laundering case relating to the Delhi excise policy. Sanjay Singh alleged that Arvind Kejriwal, who has diabetes, is not receiving insulin while in prison.
“Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister, is not receiving insulin. If a diabetic individual does not receive insulin promptly, the situation could potentially be a matter of life or death for them. There is a plot being planned to assassinate him (Arvind Kejriwal)”. Sanjay Singh told reporters on Friday that the people of Delhi will respond to this crime.
“The individual who supplied electricity, water, and various amenities to the residents of Delhi… Kejriwal, who provided free medications to the people, is being denied medicines and insulin by the current government”, as stated by Sanjay Singh to news agency ANI.
The AAP MP made the claim following a report from Tihar prison officials to Delhi lieutenant governor VK Saxena that stated Arvind Kejriwal did not need insulin as his blood sugar levels were not concerning.
Atishi, AAP Minister, claimed that the health report of Arvind Kejriwal released by Tihar authorities revealed the conspiracy involving BJP, Centre, and the Delhi Lieutenant Governor.
“Any medical professional would caution that a blood sugar level of 300 is risky. BJP has intentions to murder Arvind Kejriwal while he is in prison. What is the reason for the jail authorities’ disapproval of the Chief Minister receiving insulin injections?”, Atishi said while mentioning that he has had diabetes for 22 years and has been using insulin for the past 10 years.
Abhishek Singhvi, a member of the Chief Minister’s council, mentioned on Friday that it is ‘shocking’ and ‘alarming’ that Kejriwal has not been given insulin to manage his sugar levels ever since he was arrested.
