A startling incident unfolded in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday. Despite the country’s tough gun and knife laws, a man stabbed six and injured eight while set on a stabbing spree, as described by the eyewitnesses and officials.
What happened to the attacker?
The New South Wales emergency officials have reported that the attacker was shot dead by the police when he raised a knife at her. It has been reported that the suspect acted alone and the reason is not clear yet. The officials added that “terrorism” cannot be ruled out at this stage.
Where did the incident occur?
The expansive Westfield Bondi Junction Mall complex, with its six-level shopping centre, is located in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. At the time, the location was bustling.
New South Wales Police, in a statement, said, “Emergency services were called to Westfield Bondi Junction just before 4 p.m. (0600 GMT) following the reports”.
The police evacuated hundreds of people from the shopping centre after the incident.
The paramedics were treating patients at the scene. They remain in a serious or critical condition in hospital, which includes a nine-month-old baby.
Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “horrific.” He took it to his X account and addressed it. He also posted a video message talking further about it.
The shopping complex has currently been locked down by the police, and people are urged to avoid visiting the area.
