Navneet Rana, a BJP MP from Amravati, had her caste certificate upheld by the Supreme Court on Wednesday, overturning the prior ruling of the Bombay High Court.
MS Rana, who won the reserved Amravati parliamentary seat in Maharashtra as an independent candidate in 2019, has recently joined the BJP and is set to contest from the same constituency. Expressing his optimism before filing his nomination papers, Rana said that this election is a monumental event for her as well as the voters of Amravati.
“I have worked for the people of my area for many years. This is a big day for me and my constituency. This is the first time voters of Amravati will be able to vote for the construction, development and interests of the country,” she said, according to news agency ANI.
“The people of my constituency are happier than me. They are happy that the lotus symbol is appearing in the ballot box for the first time. The people are supporting and voting directly for Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he added.
Controversy over her fake caste certificate
A Supreme Court Justices JK Maheshwari and Sanjay Karol ruled in favor of Rana, saying the Supreme Court erred in not interfering with the Audit Commission’s report on his caste certificate.
The Bombay High Court’s decision of June 2021 to revoke Amravati MP and BJP leader Navneet Kaur Rana’s caste certificate was overturned by the supreme court.
The caste certificate was revoked by the High Court due to the fact that it was obtained through the use of false documentation. The lawmaker, who emerged victorious in 2019 as an independent candidate supported by the Nationalist Congress Party in the reserved Amravati constituency of Maharashtra, was hit with a punishment of ₹2 lakh. She was determined to be a member of the “Sikh-Chamar” caste by the High Court.
In 2021, the High Court said, “In our opinion, the terms ‘Chamar’ and ‘Sikh Chamar’ are not synonymous. The term ‘Sikh Chamar’ is also not synonymous with the term ‘Mochi’ as provided in Clause 11 List II ., Constitution of India (Scheduled Caste), order 1950.
