Heatwaves are anything by fun in the sun. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), several Indian states are witnessing heat waves; adhering to certain crucial tips will help keep you and your family safe during a heat wave.
Following are 5 tips to prevent yourself from heatwave:
-
Stay hydrated
Consumption of plenty of water is necessary to stay hydrated throughout the day. During summertime, we often drink sugary drinks and aerated drinks; these should be avoided as they cause dehydration. Additionally, avoid excessive alcohol and caffeinated beverages. It is instead advised to try consuming hydrating foods and drinks like fresh fruit juice, lassi, and coconut water.
-
Be prepared
Plan outside activities depending on the weather on that particular day. Always keep an emergency kit on you- indoors and outdoors, that contains ORS packets, water bottles, towels or cloths to wet for cooling, and a handheld fan or mister with batteries. Remember to apply sunscreen and adorn a hat or cap for sun protection.
-
Dress appropriately
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, which are light-coloured. This helps reflect sunlight and heat away from your body. Additionally, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can provide shade and protect your face and eyes from the sun’s rays.
-
Avoid outdoors during peak hours
It is best to avoid or limit outdoor activities throughout the day. However, during the hottest hours of the day, particularly between 12 pm and 4 pm, it’s important to stay indoors where it’s air-conditioned.
If you don’t have air conditioning at home, consider visiting public places like shopping malls, libraries, or community centres that offer cooling facilities.
-
Keep your environment cool
It is crucial that your house is protected from outside heat. Close the curtains or blinds during the hottest parts of the day and open windows at night to cool down the house. At home, use fans, air conditioners, and coolers to circulate air and maintain a comfortable temperature indoors.
Symptoms for heat-related illness
Always stay alert and pay attention to your body’s signals; look out for heat-related illnesses like fainting, seizures, irritability, headache, increased sweating, weakness or dizziness, and fast breathing.
Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness. It occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature.
Stay cool! Stay hydrated! And beat the heat!
